(MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW), as well as reticulocyte count (including both percentage and absolute values).

If the red blood cell count is decreased, is the anemia regenerative or non-regenerative?

Regenerative anemia can be differentiated from non-regenerative anemia by assessing the absolute reticulocyte count.

If the anemia is regenerative, is the underlying cause blood loss or hemolysis?

Patient history, clinical signs, and pathological examinations are key factors in making this differentiation. If the reticulocyte count exceeds 200,000/μL, hemolysis is highly suspected as the cause; if the reticulocyte count is low, the cause could be either hemolysis or blood loss.

If the anemia is non-regenerative, what other possible causes exist besides bone marrow disease?

Anemia of inflammation, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) infection, iron deficiency, or renal failure.

CBC should include a reticulocyte count

regardless of whether anemia is present.
